Train New Trainers (TNT) Fellowships

TPCA is excited to offer scholarships for two fellowship programs designed for primary care providers.

  • Train New Trainers Primary Care Psychiatry Fellowship 
  • Train New Trainers Primary Care – Training and Education in Addiction Medicine Fellowship

These fellowships, designed and led by the University of California, Irvine (UCI) School of Medicine, are clinically practical, evidence-informed certificate programs specifically designed to address psychiatric and substance use conditions that are frequently encountered in the primary care setting.

TPCA will provide scholarships to 15 primary care providers from our member health centers to attend either of these programs. More information on each program is available below!

    Train New Trainers (TNT) Primary Care Psychiatry (PCP) Fellowship 

    The TNT PCP Fellowship is a one-year clinical education certificate program for primary care providers who wish to receive advanced training in primary care psychiatry. 

    Participants will learn to:

    • Recognize early symptoms of common mild to moderate psychiatric conditions
    • Complete a quick and targeted “primary care psychiatric” assessment
    • Provide evidence-informed treatment using cognitive therapy techniques, motivational interviewing and use of appropriate medications
    • Train New Trainers within their health center 

    TNT PCP Fellowship Training Schedule

    The curriculum includes over 50 hours of training and will lead to a certificate of completion from the UC Irvine School of Medicine.

    • Cohort runs January 1, 2025 - December 31, 2025

    • Two (2) in-person weekend intensive trainings (24-28 class hours) 
      • January 17-18, 2025 | Coronado Island Marriott Resort & Spa in San Diego 
        Essentials to Primary Care Psychiatry Conference 2025
      • August 9-10, 2025  | Location TBD
        TNT Fellows Conference

    • Live webinars via Zoom each month (21 class hours)
      • 2nd Monday from  2:00-3:00 PM Central / 3:00-4:00 PM Eastern
      • 3rd Monday from 7:15-8:30 PM Central / 8:15-9:30 PM Eastern

    • One hour per month of mentoring sessions with a TNT faculty member (11 hours)

    • Complimentary career-long learning for alumni

    Train New Trainers (TNT) Primary Care –
    Training and Education in Addiction Medicine
    (PC-TEAM) Fellowship

    The TNT PC-TEAM Fellowship is a one-year training program designed for primary care providers working in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, and Pediatrics. It targets MDs, DOs, NPs, and PAs.

    Participants will learn to:

    • Complete an evidence-informed substance use screening in busy primary care or other general medical settings.
    • Effectively prevent, diagnose, and treat commonly encountered substance use and pain-related disorders (e.g., opioids, alcohol, stimulants, and benzodiazepines).
    • Teach these principles to their primary care colleagues

      

    TNT PC-TEAM Fellowship Training Schedule

    The curriculum includes over 50 hours of training and will lead to a certificate of completion from the UC Irvine School of Medicine 

    • Cohort runs March 1, 2025 - February 28, 2026

    • Two-weekend intensive trainings (24-28 class hours)
      • March 21-22, 2025 | JW Marriott Anaheim, CA
        Essentials to Primary Care Addiction Medicine Conference 2025
      • August 8-9, 2025 |  Location TBD
        PC-TEAM Fellows Conference

    • Live webinars via Zoom each month (21 class hours) 
      • 2nd and 3rd Monday of each month from 2:00-3:00 PM Central / 3:00-4:00 PM Eastern

    • At least one hour per month of mentoring sessions with a PC-TEAM faculty member 
      (11 hours)

    • Complimentary career-long learning for alumni
